Kakadu National Park is considered a must see for anyone visiting northern Australia.

It is on the “to do” list of most Australia visitors, and so it should be. The park has a lot to offer.

To get the most out of a visit to Kakadu requires either a lot of time or some insider knowledge.

I can’t give you more time than what you have available for your visit, but I can help with the insider knowledge!

Kakadu National Park Facts

Size, Location And Management

Kakadu National Park is situated in the top part of the Northern Territory. The northern park entrance is roughly 150 km south-east of Darwin, the Bowali Visitor Centre about 250 km. (More info)

The park is a Commonwealth Reserve, nearly 20’000 square kilometres (3.2 million acres) in size, and includes the traditional lands of several Aboriginal groups.

The park is jointly managed by its Aboriginal traditional owners and the Northern Territory government (the Commonwealth Department of Environment and Heritage, to be precise).

The name Kakadu is the result of the European interpretation of a local Aboriginal floodplain language, called Gagudju. (The name Gagudju is also used for the tribe that speaks the language. More on languages below.)

Climate

Kakadu National Park has a tropical monsoon climate with two seasons: the dry season and the wet season.

The dry season is from April/May until September, the wet season obviously from October until April/May.

Most rain falls between January and March (monthly average 300 – 350 mm, but can be much higher), often leading to flooding and closure of parts of the park.

Between October and December you may experience spectacular tropical thunderstorms, and isolated but often heavy showers.

The temperatures are highest during the “build up” for the wet season in October/November, with maximum day temperatures often exceeding 40°C and average nightly temperatures around 25°C.

Between mid June and mid August you get the most pleasant day temperatures (averages around 30°C), but also by far the biggest tourist numbers. Night temperatures during this time can drop below 10°C. Beginning and end of the dry season are warmer.

Aboriginal Art And Culture

Aborigines have lived in Kakadu for at least 25’000 years. Maybe for as long as 50’000 years…

What is now known as Kakadu National Park is a culturally diverse region, home to Aboriginals from different clans with different laws and traditions, and speaking different languages.

The above mentioned language Gagudju that gave Kakadu its name is no longer spoken regularly (but descendants of that language group still live in the park). Same for Limilngan and others. Languages still in use are Kunwinjku, Gun-djeihmi and Jawoyn. That’s three left out of twelve…

Over 5000 rock art sites can be found in Kakadu.

Ubirr and Nourlangie Rock are the two most famous locations for Aboriginal rock art.

The paintings are often “layered”, meaning they were painted over again and again by several generations, some very recently.

Today the Aboriginal people in Kakadu rarely paint on rocks. Few of them possess the required knowledge which would allow them to paint at certain sites.

Contemporary Aboriginal artists paint on materials like bark or paper. Even printing fabric with traditional designs has developed into a popular art form.

There are also “layers” of meaning and stories associated with the paintings. Every painting has a story, and there are up to 6 levels to the story. It depends on your importance and status as to which story you are allowed to know. Tourist will obviously only ever hear the first level…

Aboriginal rock art has a variety of subjects and purpose: people painted the animals they hunted (some of them are now extinct), tools they used, things they saw (white people are depicted in some newer paintings). Other themes are stories from the creation time, aspects of religious ceremonies, and they also painted to influence people’s lives and the future, a form of sorcery and magic.

When to Fly to Australia

Peak Season:

Australia enjoys its summer while Europe shivers, so December to February can be a good time to visit. It can get very hot, but it’s great weather for the beach. Many airlines offer cheap flights to Australia around this time. In spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) the weather is mild and temperatures are comfortable.

Off Season:

June to August over here is winter in Australia, but skiers and snowboarders might like to go to New South Wales and Victoria for the winter sports. In the north of the country, the summer wet season is very humid and uncomfortable.

Visa Information

How do I apply for a visitor visa?

Application forms can be obtained by contacting your closest Australian Consulate, Embassy or High Commission. You can also apply in person.

How long does it take to get a visa?

In person: U.S. and Canadian citizens can generally receive a short-stay visa while they wait.

By mail: Allow at least 21 working days. Secure and Express Mail (not courier services) are recommended.

How much is that?

If you intend to stay in Australia for three months or less, no application processing fee is payable. However an application to extend your stay after arrival will cost A$135.

A US$24 or CAN$30 processing fee must also accompany an application for a visitor visa where the intended stay in Australia is more than three months. Visas in this category may authorize a stay for up to an additional three months. Any further extension will cost A$135. Longer stay visas are normally for 3-6 months stay

Visas generally allow for multiple entries for a twelve month period. For the same processing fee of US$24, or CAN$30, you can apply for a visa valid for four years (or the life of your passport if this is less than four years). You will then not have to reapply for a visa each year you wish to visit Australia in the next four years.

How long can I stay in Australia?

As a visitor you are expected to apply for a visa which covers the full period of your intended stay. Visitors are generally granted a maximum of six months stay in any one twelve month period. As a visitor you are not allowed to be employed or take formal study in Australia. Non-formal study may be taken for up to three months (but there are limitations on extensions for study purposes).

How should I lodge my Visa Application?

The application form must be signed by the applicant personally. All persons traveling on their own passport must complete an application form. Each passport holder will be Issued with their own visa. Children under I8 years of age must provide their birth certificate showing both parents. Any parent listed on the birth certificate who is not a visa applicant along with the child, must provide notarized consent to the child traveling Or evidence that they will accompany the child (travel bookings and notarized copy Australian or NZ passport or valid visa for Australia.

When applying by mail, include a stamped self-addressed envelope large enough to enable the return of your passport. (t is your responsibility to ensure that the envelope you submit bears the necessary postage markings to enable return of your passport by certified registered, express or special-delivery mail. Applying by first class, certified or registered mail can take up to 21 days in some parts of North America. Secure, Express Mail is recommended (US Postal Express pre-paid is ideal).

A number of offices are unable to use UPS or other couriers services.

There are often additional processing requirements non-US and non-Canadian citizens (including evidence of status and, where applicable, right of re-entry to the USA. Please check with your local Consulate and generally allow more time for processing.

What about Working Visas & Immigration:

Temporary working visas can usually be obtained by people sponsored by companies or an employer in Australia. Permanent entry is generally restricted to those people who pass a rigorous points test, unless you are being sponsored as a spouse or fiancee, or dependent child.

Omega Auckland Match Race Regatta: 2 – 6 March 2010

Hosted by the Royal Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron (RNZYS), this regatta will bring together the world’s top match racing sailors, including Emirates Team New Zealand skipper Dean Barker and current world match racing champion Adam Minoprio.

Races will be held on Auckland’s inner harbour between the harbour bridge, historic Devonport and the CBD. This means spectators can count on fast and furious racing that’s close to shore. Competitors will be sailing a fleet of identical 10.2 metre (34 foot) MRX match-racing yachts designed by Bruce Farr, an internationally-acclaimed New Zealand yacht designer.

At the same time as the Omega, emerging racing champions will be in Auckland for the World Junior Match Racing Championships, also hosted by the RNZYS.

For four full-on days the waters of Viaduct Harbour will be transformed into one large marina. The latest in sail and motor boats from New Zealand and around the world will be on show, along with some elegant classics. BMW Sailing World Cup Final: 21 – 25 March 2010

This event is a match-racing regatta for amateur sailors. It involves seven international teams sailing identical 10.2 MRX boats to determine the best amateur match racing crew in the world. A New Zealand team took the cup last year, and they won’t want to give it back without a fight. This regatta is based on the successful model of the BMW Golf Cup, the world’s largest and longest running amateur golf tournament.

One that immediately springs to mind is the Pasifika Festival, which happens on Saturday March 13 at Western Springs. It’s the ultimate big happy picnic party.

Do I really need one?

Risk-takers wouldn’t ever consider buying travel insurance, budget travelers don’t want to add something else to their purchases list, while other people won’t leave home without it.

What should you do?

Before you decide for or against travel insurance consider the following:

Is there a chance the flight might get canceled?

No matter where you travel, Australia included, weather can always affect the flights’ schedule and without insurance you will lose the non-refundable money plus ruin your vacation.

You lose your wallet with your passport and money in it. Obviously it doesn’t matter where you go, this might happen. Either it gets stolen –hardly likely in Australia – or you might just lose it.
